Wir freuen uns, die erste Einzelausstellung von José Noguero in den Räumen von Greusslich Contemporary ankündigen zu dürfen. Das vielfältige Werk des 1969 geborenen spanischen Künstlers umfasst so unterschiedliche Medien wie figurative Bildhauerei, Installation, Video, Fotografie und Malerei sowie – alle Gattungen verbindend – das Basismedium Zeichnung. Noguero beherrscht außerdem eine erstaunliche Bandbreite stilistischer Möglichkeiten, die von der rigorosen Formreduktion seiner bühnenartigen Schaukästen bis zu den reich orchestrierten, formal überbordenden neueren Gemälden reicht.
Unsere Ausstellung konzentriert sich auf das Thema Malerei, das seit zwei Jahren ganz im Vordergrund von Nogueros künstlerischer Tätigkeit steht. Ausgangspunkt der meisten neueren Ölbilder ist ein geradezu klassisches Landschaftsmotiv mit wenigen Elementen: ein Baum im Vordergrund, eine weite baumbestandene Ebene mit niedrigem Horizont, ein hoher Himmel. Doch dieses scheinbar traditionelle Schema ist nur Ausgangspunkt und Anlass für eine vehemente und vielschichtige Malerei, die sich von allen figurativen Einschränkungen freimacht.
Die Bilder entstehen in einem langwierigen Prozess, dessen zahlreichen Arbeitsschritte immer wieder anhand von Zeichnungen kontrolliert, gelenkt und weitergetrieben werden.
Formale Strukturierung sowie das Aufsprengen und Zersplittern aller Strukturen sind die beiden im Widerstreit liegenden Bewegungen, die Nogueros Malerei antreiben. Noguero gelingen mit seinen neuesten Gemälden Bilder von geradezu barocker Opulenz: Über der Landschaft bilden sich geballte Farbwolken, es schießen farbige Blitze über den aufgewühlten, in Malerei-Gewittern sich entladenden Himmel. Es sind dies Bilder, in denen die Vertrautheit des Künstlers mit der Tradition, insbesondere mit der italienischen Kunst aufscheint.
Doch diese kunstgeschichtlich wohlinformierte Malerei ist zugleich eine absolut zeitgenössische, indem sie die Grenzen zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion souverän überspielt und den malerischen Prozess als autonome, eigengesetzliche Bildproduktion selbstbewusst vorantreibt.

We are pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by José Noguero in the premises of
Greusslich Contemporary. The varied work of the Spanish-born artist (b. 1969, lives in Berlin) includes such diverse media as figurative sculpture, installation, video, photography and painting - all combined with the foundational medium of drawing.
Noguero has also mastered an amazing range of stylistic possibilities, from rigorous form of minimalism of its stage-like display cases, to richly orchestrated, formally exuberant new paintings. Our exhibition focuses on the theme of painting, which has been in the foreground of Nogueros artistic activity for the past two years. The starting point of most of these oil paintings is an almost classical Landscape consisting of a few elements: a tree in the foreground, a wide low tree-lined horizon, under a vast sky. But this seemingly traditional formula is only a starting point, prompting a vehement and multi-layered painting that frees itself from all figurative limitations.
The images are produced, controlled and driven further by numerous steps during a lengthy process, which is controlled over again by the means of drawings. Formal structuring, and the blasting apart and shattering of these forms create a dual conflict that propels Nogueros paintings. In his latest paintings, Noguero has developed pictures of almost baroque opulence: above the landscape, dense clouds of color form themselves with colored flashes shooting into the troubled thunderstorm of paint in the discharging sky.
These images show the artist's familiarity with the tradition of painting, especially with the history of Italian art. But these well-informed art historical paintings are also absolutely contemporary. They enlarge the boundaries between figuration and abstraction while playing adeptly with the painting process, promoting an autonomous, self-regulatory picture production.

Nos complace anunciar la primera exposición individual de José Noguero en la Galería
Greusslich Contemporary. La obra de este artista de origen español nacido en 1969 incluye medios tan diversos como la escultura figurativa, la instalación, el video, la fotografía y la pintura, así como – común a todos los géneros – el medio básico del dibujo. Noguero también domina una impresionante gama de posibilidades estilísticas, que van desde la rigurosa reducción formal de sus vitrinas-escenario, a las opulentamente orquestadas, formalmente exuberantes nuevas pinturas.
Nuestra exposición se centra en el tema de la pintura, que en los últimos dos años ha sido primordial en la actividad artística de Noguero. El punto de partida de la mayoría de los óleos recientes es un paisaje de carácter clásico compuesto por pocos elementos: un árbol en primer plano, un amplio y arbolado horizonte bajo, un alto cielo. Pero este modelo de aspecto tradicional es sólo el punto de partida para el desarrollo de una pintura vehemente y compleja que se libera de todas las limitaciones de lo figurativo.
Las imágenes se construyen en un largo proceso de trabajo, cuyos numerosos pasos son reiteradamente controlados, articulados e impulsados por medio de los dibujos. Estructuración formal por un lado, y por otro la voladura y fragmentación de toda estructura son los dos movimientos en conflicto que impulsan la pintura de Noquero. En sus lienzos más recientes, el artista logra imágenes de una opulencia casi barroca: sobre el paisaje se forman espesas nubes de color, cuyos relámpagos llenan un cielo huracanado que se descarga en una tormenta eléctrica de pintura.
Es en estas imágenes en las que mejor se aprecia la familiaridad del artista con la tradición, sobre todo con el arte italiano. Se trata de una pintura arraigada en la historia del arte y sin embargo absolutamente contemporánea en su manera de sobrepasar las fronteras entre abstracción y figuración, promoviendo con confianza el proceso pictórico como una producción de imágenes autónoma y autorregulada.
